Why They Removed Thousands of Unbroken Windows [20:40]
Boston’s John Hancock Tower was supposed to be a seamless mirrored-glass skyscraper. Instead, windows started falling and plywood filled the gaps. The city called it the Plywood Palace.
But the broken windows were only part of the story. Why were thousands of panes that hadn’t broken deliberately taken out?
This animated true story follows the investigation: damaged glass, competing explanations, laboratory tests, and the problem of deciding which windows could safely stay. By June 1973, roughly 2,400 panes had been removed. Ultimately, all 10,344 original panes were replaced.
The tower stands in Boston’s Copley Square and is now known as 200 Clarendon Street.
Strange on Record tells extraordinary true stories where the fun is figuring out how they actually happened.
